This State of the Nation report on ophthalmology care in England offers a comprehensive view of the burden that ophthalmic conditions such as wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) can place on both individuals and the wider NHS.
Here, using Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data, we explore key trends and themes in ophthalmology service delivery, looking through both national and local lenses and highlighting the pressures caused by increasing demand, workforce and capacity constraints, and significant variation in service delivery and patient access.
This report aims to serve as a resource for local systems to evaluate their current service models, identify areas for improvement, and support strategic planning for enhanced service delivery.
